SUPERMARKETS & FARMER’S MARKETS

From almost anywhere in the city of Beppu, you can easily locate a supermarket within walking distance. Many of these are open until late at night and some are even open 24 hours a day. At the average supermarket, you can find typical grocery items like meat, fish, fruits, vegetables, dairy products, flour, grains, sauces, and spices. Some larger supermarkets also carry stationery, clothes, and over-the-counter medicine.

For locally-grown produce, there is a busy local market under the elevated railway tracks near Beppu Station with stalls open every day until around 6pm. You can also purchase fresh fruits and vegetables at very low prices at farmer’s markets and events run by the Japan Agriculture Cooperatives (JA). There are also markets for organic vegetables and other specialty food items held once or twice a month.

INTERNATIONAL FOOD

Local supermarkets and department stores sell a large range of groceries and spices for many different cuisines. Yusha Restaurant, located in the Mochigahama area of Beppu, sells many ingredients specifically for South Asian and halal food. Take a 15 minutes train ride to Oita City, you will find an import store called Jupiter inside the shopping plaza in Oita Station. Ordering online is another option. Japan has superior transport services that allow you to receive goods fresh and quickly, sometimes arriving in as little as one or two days.

DINING OUT

Beppu is famous for its own style of fried chicken known as toriten, high quality beef, and fresh seafood but you can enjoy international food as well. There are major chains of restaurants, fast food chains, and cafés such as Joyfull, Gusto, Coco Ichiban Curry House, Yoshinoya, McDonald’s, KFC, Lotteria, Mos Burger, and Starbucks. In addition to these major chains are delicious local restaurants offering sushi, ramen, udon, Japanese high-end delicacies, as well as international options such as Korean, Italian, Chinese, Indian, and Indonesian food. Many restaurants offer all-you-can-eat buffets which are very popular among our students. Some restaurants also provide student discounts.
