Language Education

Language Education

Communication is one of the first steps to international understanding and language is one of the many tools that makes it possible. This is why APU pays particular emphasis on providing you with the best environment and tools to develop and improve your language and communication skills. As you apply for APU, you will choose whether you would prefer to do your coursework in English or Japanese. No prior knowledge of the other language is required. However, you will be required to be able to communicate in both languages by the time you graduate. Upon enrollment, you will take a placement test in the language that is not your language of choice for instruction. The results of this test will determine the starting level of your language classes. The language classes are intensive and cater for all levels, from beginners to advanced learners. By the time you graduate, you will be able to communicate fluently and effectively in both Japanese and English.

ASIA PACIFIC LANGUAGES

In addition to the basic languages of communication, you can expand your horizons by learning an additional language spoken in the Asia Pacific region. The six Asia Pacific language courses taught at APU are:

  • Chinese
  • Korean
  • Malay/Indonesian
  • Spanish
  • Thai
  • Vietnamese

At APU, you will be able to practice what you learn in class by communicating on campus with students from countries where these languages are spoken natively. You will also be able to join various programs designed to assist you to raise your proficiency.

SALC: Self-Access Learning Center

SALC is a self-study room that supports language learning outside of regular classes. Student advisors called PAs (Peer Advisors) provide individual support for conversation practice and writing. Students can also receive language learning advice from language instructors. With level-specific books for both English and Japanese, as well as books to prepare for language examinations, SALC is a strong ally to support your language learning! Of course, you can also use the study materials for Asia Pacific languages offered at APU. In addition, online events are held for international and domestic students to improve their language skills through exchange.
