1. Why Study in Japan?

Quality of Education

Japan's advanced technology and its global presence are rooted in high-quality education. Japan is home to some of the world’s top universities, which offer excellent programs, experienced professors, and modern facilities. A degree from a Japanese university is respected around the world and can help you build a strong future.

Diverse Learning Opportunities

You can study many different subjects in Japan—like science, business, engineering, and social  sciences. You also can participate in innovative research projects, gain internship experience, and study both theoretical and hands-on knowledge. At universities like Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU), you’ll study with students from many countries and learn in a global environment. Safe Living Environment

Japan is known for being one of the safest countries in the world. With a low crime rate, reliable public transportation, and friendly locals, you can enjoy a peaceful and secure lifestyle. Whether you're walking around the city or commuting to campus, you’ll feel safe and welcome every day.

Cultural Experiences

Studying in Japan is also a chance to enjoy the unique culture. You can experience both traditional and modern life—from tea ceremonies and temples to anime and high-tech cities. You’ll also learn the cultural values of Japanese society, like teamwork, respect, responsibility, and craftmanship, which can help you develop a broader global perspective.

2. Universities in Japan for International Students

Universities offering English-Taught Programs in Japan

Japan is becoming an increasingly popular destination for international students, offering high-quality education, cultural richness, and career opportunities. While many undergraduate programs in Japan are taught in Japanese and begin in April, several universities now offer English-taught programs that start in September or the autumn semester, making it easier for international students to begin their studies.

One of the leading institutions in this space is Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU). Located in Beppu, APU is a private university with a strong focus on international education and a truly global campus. APU offers bilingual programs in English and Japanese, allowing students to study in English while gradually improving their Japanese language skills. The university specializes in fields such as global business, social sciences, and sustainable development, and its diverse student body represents over 100 countries and regions.

In Japan, about 500 universities*1 accept international students. Over 140,000 students*2 from around the world are studying in bachelor’s and master’s programs. The number has been growing every year since COVID-19. This shows Japan’s strong commitment to welcoming students from other countries and creating inclusive learning environments. Japan is now one of the most popular places to study abroad.

3. Scholarships and Financial Aid

MEXT Scholarship

This is a government scholarship offered by Japan’s Ministry of Education (MEXT). It covers full tuition, a monthly living allowance, and round-trip airfare for outstanding international students.

JASSO Financial Support

The Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) offers scholarships to help with tuition and living costs.

University-Specific Scholarships

Many universities offer scholarships for international students. For example, APU provides a Tuition Reduction Scholarship, which covers between 30% and 100% of tuition fees. This scholarship is awarded based on a holistic evaluation of all submitted documents, the recorded interview, and financial need.

4. Application Process for International Students

Admission Requirements

Each university has its own application process, but most require a high school diploma, English or Japanese test scores, a personal statement, and letters of recommendation.

Language Proficiency Requirements

For English-taught programs, you’ll usually need to submit TOEFL® or IELTS scores. For Japanese programs, JLPT N2 is often required. Some universities also accept scores from other tests, such as the EJU (Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students), especially the "Japanese as a Foreign Language" section. Each university has its own rules, so be sure to check their admission guidelines carefully.

Visa Procedures

To study in Japan, you need a student visa.  If you are admitted and complete the required enrollment procedures, the university will apply for a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) from the Japanese Immigration Bureau on your behalf. You’ll use this to apply for a student visa at the Japanese embassy or consulate in your country. The embassy will check your documents and, if everything is fine, issue your student visa. Once you get your student visa, you can then prepare to go to Japan.

5. Living in Japan as a Student

Cost of Living

The cost of living in Japan varies by city, but overall, it is more affordable compared to many other popular study abroad destinations. Estimated monthly expenses in Japan:

  • Tokyo: $1,500–$2,000
  • Kyoto/Osaka: $1,200–$1,600
  • Beppu (APU’s location): $800–$1,200

Compared to:

  • London: $2,000–$2,800
  • Los Angeles: $2,000–$2,500
  • Sydney: $1,800–$2,400

This makes Japan a relatively budget-friendly option for international students, especially in smaller cities like Beppu.

Student Accommodation

Most universities offer housing, while private apartments are another option. APU provides on-campus housing and housing scholarships as of June 25, 2025.

Part-Time Work Opportunities

International students in Japan can work part-time for up to 28 hours per week during the school term, with a valid work permit.  Popular part-time jobs include working at cafes, convenience stores, and tutoring. These jobs (called arubaito in Japanese) can help cover daily living expenses and improve your Japanese language skills. During long school breaks, such as summer or winter vacation, students are allowed to work up to 40 hours per week.  This rule is set by the Immigration Services Agency of Japan.

Student Life

Student life in Japan is full of new experiences, both inside and outside the classroom.  You can join clubs, attend cultural events, and participate in language exchange programs.  Universities in Japan often provide support services for international students, including academic advising, assistance with daily life, and help with visa procedures.

At APU, students from over 100 countries/regions come together to create a truly global campus. First-year students live in on-campus housing, making it easy to build friendships across cultures. The campus, located in the peaceful hot spring city of Beppu, hosts regular multicultural events and language exchange activities in a beautiful natural setting.

8. Study Abroad vs. Full Degree Program in Japan

Key Differences

  • Study Abroad Programs: These programs usually last from a few months to one year. You can take classes in Japan and the credits may be transferable to your home university
  • Full Degree Program: You'll spend four years and graduate with a degree from a university in Japan. It gives you more time to enjoy Japanese culture, build international friendships, and explore global career opportunities.

Which Option is Best for You?

  • If you want to experience Japan for a short time, a study abroad program is a great way to explore the culture and meet people.
  • If you're planning to stay longer, a full degree program is a better choice.  It offers deeper learning, more time in Japan, and stronger career opportunities.
  • Universities like APU offer full degree programs both in English and Japanese, making it an accessible option for international students.
