Start of the Japan Pre-Entry Tuberculosis Screening (JPETS)
For Nationalities of the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Nepal, Myanmar, China

From June 2025, those who are nationals of the Philippines, Nepal, Vietnam, Indonesia, Myanmar, and China will be required to undergo the Japan Pre-Entry Tuberculosis Screening (JPETS) when applying for a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) to enter Japan. (The start time of this requirement varies by nationality.) Please check here for more information.

Do you currently possess Japanese nationality, including Japanese dual nationality, or will have by the time of your application?

Yes No

You are considered a Japanese/domestic applicant, regardless of your place of residence or language-basis that you will apply for (either English/Japanese-basis).

Contact the Office of Domestic Admissions ([email protected]) to find out how to apply or for further information. However, if you are in the process of renouncing your Japanese nationality, consult with the Office of Domestic Admissions before submitting your application. If one of your parents has Japanese nationality, there is a possibility that you also have Japanese nationality. Be sure to confirm this in advance.

Do you currently have permanent residency status in Japan, or will have by the time of your application?

Yes No

You are considered a Japanese/domestic applicant. You must apply through the Domestic Student Admissions regardless of your place of residence or language-basis (either English/Japanese-basis) that you will apply for.

FAQ

Should I make an APU Online Application System account even if I haven’t decided to apply to APU yet?

Yes! By registering with our online application system, you will not only be able to apply to APU but also receive up-to-date event information and application reminders.

I've never been to Japan and I don't speak Japanese. Can I still study at APU?

Yes. Many of our international students have never visited Japan or studied Japanese before enrolling at APU. Almost all courses at APU are offered in both English and Japanese, meaning applicants only need sufficient ability in one of these languages at the time of enrollment. However, for English-basis students that have no Japanese language abilities, it is highly encouraged for you to start learning basic Japanese on your own before coming to APU. This will ensure you have a smooth start as you will be required to take intensive Japanese language classes in order to graduate. The reverse applies to Japanese-basis students with limited or no English ability.
