The Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship for Privately-Financed International Students - JASSO Scholarship
If you enroll at APU, you may be eligible to receive the Reservation Program for the Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship for Privately-Financed International Students by Pre-arrival Admission (hereinafter refered to as the JASSO Scholarship).
These scholarships are awarded to privately funded international students who are expected to enroll in APU, excel in both academic and personal endeavors, and are facing difficulties in pursuing their university education due to economic reasons. The objective of this program is to alleviate economic anxiety after students have arrived in Japan and continued onto higher studies, to improve admission procedures prior to arrival in Japan, and to help students make the most of their education. For a maximum of one year, the Government of Japan will provide a monthly subsidy of 48,000 yen (actual disbursements in AY 2025) to eligible students.
Payment Breakdown
- April Enrollment: 48,000 yen (monthly) × 12 months (maximum)
- September Enrollment: 48,000 yen (monthly) × 6 months (maximum)
Eligibility Criteria for English Basis Students
- Have applied to APU from outside Japan and do not have a long-term residence in Japan at the time of application.
- Do not have Japanese nationality.
- Must obtain a "Student" status of residence to study in Japan before enrolling at APU.
- Be a privately financed student.
- The average monthly support from your financial sponsors must be 90,000 JPY or less (excluding expenses for admissions fees and tuition, etc.).
- (Only if you have financial sponsors residing in Japan) The annual income of the financial sponsor must be less than five million JPY.
Eligibility Criteria for Japanese Basis Students
- Have applied to APU from outside Japan and do not have a long-term residence in Japan at the time of application.
- Do not have Japanese nationality.
- Must obtain a "Student" status of residence to study in Japan before enrolling at APU.
- Be a privately financed student.
- The average monthly support from your financial sponsors must be 90,000 JPY or less (excluding expenses for admissions fees and tuition, etc.).
- (Only if you have financial sponsors residing in Japan) The annual income of the financial sponsor must be less than five million JPY.
- Take the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU) outside of Japan and send the results to APU (regardless of score attained).

- Selection
- Recipients will be selected based on a comprehensive evaluation of the submitted financial documents and the admissions screening results. The number of recipients is determined by the Government of Japan.
- Notification of Results
- Scholarship recipients will be notified after enrollment. Results of the JASSO Scholarship will not be released prior to enrollment.
