APU Team Wins Second Place at Cornell University's Business Case Competition

On Thursday, October 31, 2024, a team of APU students achieved an impressive second-place finish at the Corning Case Competition held in New York City, USA, hosted by Cornell University. This marked the first time that a Japanese educational institution assembled a team selected as a finalist in this prestigious competition.

The Corning Case Competition is one of the main events of the Cornell Emerging Markets Institute (EMI) Conference, a leading annual forum in the United States focused on discussing trends and phenomena in emerging markets. This year, 705 students from 154 teams representing 48 institutions across 15 countries and regions participated in the event.

In this competition, teams are tasked with identifying and proposing solutions to real-world challenges faced by businesses and executives in global markets. This year’s case centered on challenges faced by an electric vehicle (EV) company in Vietnam. During the preliminary round held in September, teams submitted presentation slides and recorded presentations for evaluation. Out of the initial 154 teams, eight advanced to the final round.

The finals took place in person at Bloomberg Auditorium, Cornell Tech, NYC, where each team delivered two rounds of presentations followed by Q&A sessions. Teams were evaluated on several criteria, including the depth of their analysis, the realism and strategic nature of their proposals, the clarity of their short- and long-term plans, risk mitigation strategies, the innovativeness of their ideas, and the persuasiveness of their presentations and responses. APU’s team impressed the judges with their structured approach, particularly their use of the 3P analysis (People, Planet and Profit) for every solution they presented, earning them a well-deserved second place. The judge also commended their storytelling skills and how effectively they tied together different aspects of the case to create a cohesive and compelling narrative.

After being selected as finalists, they also received additional mentoring from Professor ALCANTARA Lailani, whose feedback helped refine their final presentation.

On Saturday, June 14, 2025, a team from APU claimed first place at PMI (Project Management Institute) Region9 Project Management Case Competition Global Finals, held in Taiwan.

The competition, which featured 99 participating projects from across the Asia-Pacific, aimed to promote strategic thinking and sustainable impact through the application of project management tools. To those considering joining future editions of the PMI Region 9 Competition, go for it. This is not just a contest of ideas, but a test of leadership, collaboration, and your ability to think beyond yourself. You don’t need to be a tech wizard or a PMI-certified professional. What matters is having a clear purpose, a strong team, and the drive to apply project management principles effectively. Take feedback seriously, iterate on your prototype, and don’t underestimate the power of storytelling.

PMI offers a safe, structured way to practice real-world leadership. You’ll gain practical skills—and more importantly, the confidence to lead change in your own community.

GRATIA Dearios Ompusunggu

To anyone considering PMI Region 9, honestly, just try it. The experience was intense, but also very fun. We learned a lot, made new friends, and got to see how other teams think. If you’re not sure about joining, just go for it and see where it takes you. Sometimes things work out better than you expect.

APU Team Secures Second Runner-Up Spot at HSBC International Case Competition

On Friday, June 6, 2025, a team from APU earned Second Runner-Up at the prestigious HSBC/HKU Asia Pacific Business Case Competition in Hong Kong. Entry into this international competition requires teams to either win their regional rounds or receive a direct invitation from the organizers. APU secured their spot by emerging victorious at the Japan regional competition, held at Waseda University, earning them the opportunity to represent Japan on the international stage.

The team advanced through the regional preliminary rounds and reached the international finals thanks to several key factors. Their strategy to maintain a clear division of roles enhanced their efficiency under pressure, and they engaged in rigorous internal logic-checking by constantly questioning each other’s ideas. This approach led them to realistic solutions that were supported by strong analytical backing of financial and risk considerations. Additionally, the team actively participated in events organized by the competition, notably winning Best Dressed award on the first night of the international competition by wearing yukata, which established their presence and helped secure their spot in the finals.

The team was mentored by Assistant Professor PHAM Tam Long from the College of International Management.

Participating in this Competition was an unforgettable and enriching experience. It brought together some of the brightest minds from across the region and provided a rare opportunity to engage with real-world business challenges in a high-pressure, competitive setting.

The preparation phase itself was intense and required dedication, strategic thinking, and the ability to adapt quickly. With only a limited amount of time to analyze cases and develop solutions, every moment counted. The competition pushed us to think critically, communicate effectively, and work collaboratively under pressure. It wasn’t just about finding the "right" answer—it was about presenting ideas that were innovative, practical, and aligned with long-term business goals.

One of the most valuable aspects of the experience was the exposure to diverse perspectives. Engaging with teams from other countries and receiving feedback from industry professionals helped broaden our understanding of the global business landscape. The level of professionalism, insight, and creativity displayed throughout the competition was truly inspiring.

To anyone considering applying in the future: go for it. Whether or not you win, the experience itself is life-changing. It teaches you how to think beyond textbooks, how to trust your instincts under pressure, and how to grow through challenge. If you’re willing to give it your all, you’ll walk away with more than just memories—you’ll gain skills, confidence, and a deeper sense of purpose.

The future is yours to lead. Step onto the global stage.

All the programs introduced here begin with your ambition to excel. We invite you to seize these opportunities and transform your academic knowledge into powerful, real-world expertise.
Take the challenge on the front lines of business and lead the way. APM is here to fully support your first step toward becoming a global professional.
