At APU, there is nearly a 50-50 ratio of Japanese and international students, and many Japanese students are very accommodating. Even though my Japanese isn't perfect, they are willing to listen and try to understand me. When we struggle to communicate, we use gestures and find other ways to get our points across. In classes with both Japanese and English-speaking students, we all make an effort to communicate in both languages. Many Japanese students are eager to learn English, so we can help each other practice. I have a lot of international friends, but I also have many Japanese friends, and my network at APU is always growing.

Choosing APU was an easy decision for me. As someone passionate about international relations, I was drawn to APU’s renowned program, which has a strong reputation in my home country of Sri Lanka. I challenged myself by applying as a Japanese-basis student and am proud to embrace this experience. APU’s language immersion programs, offered in six languages, have broadened my global perspective. Through internships and hands-on projects, I’ve gained practical skills and valuable connections. I’ve also applied for a domestic exchange in Japan to deepen my understanding of Japanese culture. APU has offered me great opportunities to grow, and I'm excited to see where this journey takes me.

During my time at AP House, I made many wonderful friends from Japan who regularly held themed parties, allowing me to enjoy delicious Japanese snacks. They supported me during challenges such as making phone calls to banks and visiting the hospital. Through a host program, I spent a weekend with a Japanese family in a small rural city, which enriched my understanding of daily life in Japan. I also met many Japanese friends in classes like the Multicultural Cooperative Workshop and Global Leadership, which foster collaboration between international and Japanese students. Additionally, language exchange classes helped me practice my Japanese, and I made one of my closest friends!
