The Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship for Privately-Financed International Students
- JASSO Scholarship

Once you have enrolled at APU, you may apply for the following scholarships:

  • Reservation Program for the Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship for Privately-Financed International Students by Pre-arrival Admission (hereinafter reffered to as JASSO Scholarship)
  • The Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship for Privately-Financed International Students who participated in the Study in Japan Global Network Project (hereinafter reffered to as JASSO Study in Japan Scholarship)

Both types of scholarships are awarded with the following aims, however the conditions for the two scholarships differ.

Scholarship Overview

These scholarships are awarded to privately funded international students who are expected to enroll in APU, excel in both academic and personal endeavors, and are facing difficulties in attending school due to economic reasons. The objective of this program is to alleviate economic anxiety after students have arrived in Japan and continued onto higher studies, to improve admission procedures prior to arrival in Japan, and to help students make the most of their education. For a maximum of one year, the Government of Japan will provide a monthly subsidy of 48,000 yen (actual disbursements in AY 2021) to eligible students.

Payment Breakdown (JASSO Scholarship and JASSO Study in Japan Scholarship)

  1. April Entrance: 48,000 yen (monthly) × 12 months (maximum)
  2. September Entrance: 48,000 yen (monthly) × 6 months (maximum)

As per the scholarship foundation , International Students who fail to enter Japan will not be awarded the scholarship payment. Scholarships may also cease to be granted if you do not enter the country by specific date.

JASSO Scholarship: Eligibility Criteria for English Basis Students

  1. 1. Intend to study in Japan from overseas, and currently do not have a long-term residence in Japan.
  2. 2. Does not have a Japanese nationality
  3. 3. Must obtain a student visa to study in Japan before enrolling at APU.
  4. 4. Privately financed student
  5. 5. The average monthly remittance is 90,000 JPY or less (excluding expenses for admissions fees and tuition, etc.).
  6. 6. (Applicable only if the dependent will reside in Japan) The annual income of the dependent must be less than five million yen.
  7. 7. Has the necessary language skills to enroll into APU. Note applicants taking the TOEIC® L&R Test must have above 780 points while Duolingo applicants must have above 100 points. *Applicants who are exempt from the English language requirements are also eligible to apply.

JASSO Scholarship: Eligibility Criteria for Japanese Basis Students

  • 1. Intend to study in Japan from overseas, and currently do not have a long-term residence in Japan.
  • 2. Does not have a Japanese nationality
  • 3. Must obtain a student visa to study in Japan before enrolling at APU.
  • 4. Privately financed student
  • 5. The average monthly remittance is 90,000 JPY or less (excluding expenses for admissions fees and tuition, etc.).
  • 6. (Applicable only if the dependent will reside in Japan) The annual income of the dependent must be less than five million yen.
  • 7. Take the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU) outside of Japan and send the results to APU by the following date (regardless of score attained).

      Submission deadline: April entrance 28th February, September entrance 31st August

JASSO Study in Japan Scholarship Eligibility Criteria

  • 1. Must have participated in any activities listed below organized by Study in Japan Global Network Project prior to finishing application to APU:
    • Consultation with overseas study coordinators and network organizations.
    • Participated in educations fairs (physical or online) organized by Study in Japan Global Network Project.
    • Visited overseas network organization offices.

      Participation deadline: April entrance 31st December, September entrance 30th June

  • 2. Must hold a nationality of a MEXT designated country, and does not have Japanese nationality.
  • 3. Must obtain a student visa to study in Japan before enrolling at APU.
  • 4. Privately financed student
  • 5. The average monthly remittance is 90,000 JPY or less (excluding expenses for admission fees and tuition, etc.)
  • 6. (Applicable only if the dependent will reside in Japan) The annual income of the dependent must be less than five million yen

Study in Japan Global Network Project

Study in Japan Global Network Project was launched by the Japanese government to encourage international students to come and study in Japan. Notification of Results

If your JASSO scholarship application is successful, you will be contacted by the university staff upon admission to APU. Results of the JASSO Scholarship will not be released prior to enrollment.
