Health

Taking care of your health while you are away from home in a new country is very important. APU and the Japanese government offer the following extensive healthcare supports:

Health Clinic

APU has a health clinic on campus and specialists help students maintain good health during their time in Japan. The specialists provide first aid treatment for illnesses and injuries, refer students to local medical institutions if necessary and offer counseling on physical and psychological health issues. Please do not hesitate to visit the health clinic if you do not feel well or if you are having any health problems.

Counseling Room

The Counseling Room supports you as you work through the stress and anxieties of your new college life. Whenever you think "I need someone to listen..." please feel free to come and knock on our door! In the individual counseling rooms you can talk freely at your own pace with your counselor. All matters discussed will be kept in strictest confidence. Consultation is free and available in English, Japanese, Korean and Chinese.

Periodic Health Check-ups

All APU students must have a health check-up once a year for the early detection of illnesses. The annual health check-ups are free of charge, and a good way to monitor your health while living away from home.

National Health Insurance

All international students must join the national health insurance program to avoid having to pay high medical costs if you become sick or injured. With the insurance, students are only required to pay 30% of any medical costs incurred, which means that you can obtain good medical treatment at a low cost with low insurance fees (approximately 19,000 JPY yearly in Beppu City for students with no income). Also if the medical expenses per month rise above a certain amount (approximately 36,000 JPY), you can gain a refund for the excess amount upon approval of the city council.
